This site provides information regarding the two commonest upper gastro-intestinal pathologies, Gallstone disease & Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (acid reflux disease). Both these conditions cause indigestion (dyspepsia) and can account for reduced productivity and compromised well being. An estimated 5 million people in the UK have gallstones, although majority of these patients will be unaware of their presence. Symptoms and complications from gallstones can be quite crippling and result in a significant deterioration in ones quality of life. It is hence very important not only to be able to have rapid access to a confirmed diagnosis, but also be assured of speedy treatment in a specialised unit. Gastro-oesophageal Reflux Disease (GORD) is a common condition, and one of the most frequent causes of indigestion and heartburn. Dyspepsia affects 40 % of the adult UK population of whom half will have symptoms of GORD. However, only 1 in 10 will visit their GP. Having access to a specialised unit is very useful from the point of having validated tests, followed by a confirmed diagnosis and access to various treatment approaches. This should help. Pancreatic Cancer has also been discussed at this site as it is a silent killer with a poor survival rate. I strongly believe that early diagnosis is the key to improving its survival rate. |
